Your most embarrassing date moment?
One time I suggested sushi for a date, failing to remember that I didn't know how to use chopsticks. At first, I thought I was being smooth because I was managing to get the sushi close to my mouth, but each time I’d lose grip and our conversations would be interrupted by pieces of fish plopping back onto my plate. At first he found it endearing, but by the end, it was no longer cute — the struggle was real, and he realized I had very minimal to no fine motor skills. He was such a sweetheart and said, “you know, there is another way to eat sushi…” and started eating with his hands. I'm so grateful he was an incredible date, and I’ve since made it my goal to master the art of using chopsticks!
What career accomplishment are you most proud of?
LMU’s Graduate Student of the Year award and my having been nominated for the prestigious Sue Lehmann award are two accomplishments I’m extremely proud of because they recognize my journey as an educator. Throughout these years, I have been challenged in ways beyond my imagination. Yet, it has been an extremely humbling experience to see my students as equal partners in learning – I truly believe I have learned equally as much, if not more, from my students than they have from me. In this line of work, I not only get to push students to exceed the high expectations I set for them, but they, too, push me to exceed my own.
