Worst pre-Hinge date?
I once went out with a guy who thought it was cute to pinch my butt. But, like, hard. I tried to discourage it in a teasing way, but the date was over when I had to whip around and say “THE PINCHING IS HORRIBLE.”
You’re a professional jazz singer, which is the coolest possible genre, but not the most accessible in this era. How’d you get into it?
I’ve loved singing and acting since I was a kid, and made my stage debut in The Wizard of Oz at age 8. I continued with musicals well into high school, but I knew I wanted to sing more, so I joined the jazz choir. The music completely moved me. I continued singing with the jazz band at Williams, but after graduating I had an opportunity to move to New York to perform in an Off-Off-Broadway show. That experience made me realize that acting was not what I wanted to do full time, and that I needed to make singing into my career… so I did! I had my proudest “career moment” after I finished my first self-produced album. Admittedly, it’s not perfect, but I learned so much about myself and the professional process of being a musician. Also, fun fact: one of the songs was recorded in the same studio as Baby Got Back.
