Your most embarrassing date moment?
A couple months ago, a buddy set me up on a blind date, and made plans for us to rendezvous at one of my favorite cocktail bars in DC. The evening of the date, I was caught late in a meeting AND my phone died on the Uber ride. Since I'd never met this girl before, I also had no idea what she looked like. I finally arrived 15 minutes late and was relieved to see only one woman sitting at the bar. I introduced myself and apologized, and she smiled, saying I could make it up by getting her a drink. We ordered cocktails and had a refreshingly enjoyable conversation. Ten minutes later, a guy walks up to "my date" and puts his hand on her shoulder. She gets up, gives him a giant kiss, and introduces me to her boyfriend, whom she has been waiting for this entire time. They excused themselves to another table and I was left at the bar, alone.
What career accomplishment are you most proud of?
As a former senior policy adviser for a North Carolina member of congress, I had the privilege of working closely with people from my home state to find legislative solutions to serious challenges. One of the bills I drafted actually made it across the finish line and was signed into law by President Obama! Like something out of School House Rock, we guided the bill through subcommittee, committee, and then got an overwhelming majority of bipartisan votes. The law now ensures the protection of some of North Carolina’s most precious natural resources against overdevelopment — something I’m proud to have contributed to my state and its future generations.
